Our Stuff the Bus Project

The 1st annual United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley Stuff the Bus Project was a great success!!

To date, we have distributed over 170 book bags filled with school supplies to children in need in the Mahoning Valley. The response for donations has been so generous that we will continue to distribute school supplies to those in need well into the beginning of the school year. If you know of anyone in need, please have them call the United Way office at 330.746.8494.

Special thanks to V&M Star for their donation of $2,500 to the project. Through this generous donation, funds were given to Youngstown, Struthers, and Campbell schools to purchase school supplies for their students. These three schools were chosen because they have the highest poverty rate in the Mahoning Valley.

As of today, $578,285 or 23% of our 2009 Campaign Goal has been raised. Look for our thermometers in the community!

WHO WE HAVE HELPED:

Thanks to the generous support of our community, one mother who speaks very little English was able to receive book bags for her seven children. She came into the United Way office overwhelmed by the generosity and was so grateful for the donation.

Another mother, who is recently a widow, came in the office with her son to pick up book bags for her four children - purple and pink book bags for the girls and blue and green book bags for the boys. When the little boy saw the book bags, he immediately said that blue was his favorite color and green was his brother's. The mother said that the pink and purple were perfect for the girls as well and that this was truly meant to be.

In existence since 1919, the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is a non-profit organization that raises and distributes funds to over 70 programs of 27 local health and service agencies. Each year, approximately one out of every four people in the Mahoning Valley receives services from a United Way-funded agency.
